Perplexity SEO: How to Rank in Perplexity Recommendations (2026)

·3 min read·guide·perplexity

Perplexity is the third AI most local customers touch — smaller than ChatGPT and Gemini, but growing fast (its traffic share more than doubled in the last year) and unusually influential because every answer shows its sources. Understanding how it picks businesses is easier than for any other AI, because it tells you.

How Perplexity finds local businesses

Three mechanics make Perplexity different:

1. It has a Yelp integration. Since 2024, Perplexity pulls structured local data — ratings, review counts, hours, maps — directly from Yelp's API for local queries. If your Yelp profile is thin or unclaimed, you're handing Perplexity nothing to work with. This is the single most Perplexity-specific fix: claim and complete your Yelp listing, keep photos and details current, and treat Yelp reviews with the same seriousness you give Google's.

2. It leans on community sources. Reddit appears in nearly half of Perplexity's top results across query types — far more than in ChatGPT's. Threads like "best plumber in [city]?" on the city's subreddit get cited directly. You can't astroturf this (and shouldn't try — Reddit's antibodies are vicious), but genuinely happy customers mentioning you in local threads is worth more here than anywhere else. Some businesses simply ask satisfied customers: "if you're on Reddit or a local Facebook group, a mention helps us more than a Google review."

3. Citations are visible. Every recommendation links its sources. Run your trade's query for your town today and you can see exactly which pages Perplexity trusts — usually a mix of Yelp, a couple of local listicles, and business websites. Those pages are your target list: be on them.

What carries over from ChatGPT optimization

Our 1,000-business research found the fundamentals travel across engines: a readable website (businesses without one are invisible everywhere), reviews on multiple platforms, and pages that say what you do and where in the customer's words. Perplexity adds its own twists — Yelp weight, Reddit weight — on top of the same foundation.

One more shared trait: like ChatGPT, Perplexity recommends only a handful of businesses per query (about 7% of locations appear at all, per 2026 industry measurement — better odds than ChatGPT's 1.2%, but still a short shortlist). The shortlist dynamic means small fixes move you from invisible to recommended; there's no page two to climb through.

The Perplexity checklist

  1. Claim and fully complete your Yelp business profile (photos, services, hours, response to reviews)
  2. Make sure your website passes the basics: loads fast, says your trade + town in titles and headings, lists specialisms in plain words
  3. Search Perplexity for your top three customer questions; note every source it cites
  4. Get listed on the cited pages you're missing from (directories, local "best of" articles where they exist for your trade)
  5. Encourage organic community mentions — never fake them
  6. Re-check monthly; Perplexity's recency bias means results move faster than Google's

Honest expectations

Perplexity's local results are genuinely less mature than Google's — its own Comet browser defaults to Google for restaurant-style queries, which tells you what Perplexity thinks of its local coverage. But that immaturity is the opportunity: the businesses that show up are the few that exist where it looks, and in most towns nobody has done the twenty minutes of Yelp hygiene that puts you in the running.
