AI SEO Services: What They Cost in 2026 — and What You Should Actually Pay
Type "AI SEO services" into Google and you'll meet a pricing landscape that makes no sense: $39/month tools, $497 one-time audits, $2,500/month retainers, $8,000 "content restructuring" projects — all promising roughly the same thing. We tore down what these services actually deliver (it's our market, so we did it properly), and cross-referenced the deliverables against our own 1,000-business study of what moves AI visibility. Here's the honest map.
What the market charges (June 2026)
| Service type | Typical price | What's in the box |
|---|---|---|
| AI visibility audit | $300–$2,500 one-time | Queries run across AI engines, gap report, fix recommendations |
| SMB "GEO" retainer | $500–$1,500/month | Monitoring, citations, schema work, some content |
| Mid-market GEO retainer | $2,000–$4,000/month | The above plus content programs and review campaigns |
| AI-ready website build | $4,500–$6,300 (or ~$450/mo) | 5–7 page site engineered for AI readability |
| Self-serve SaaS tools | $20–$200/month | AI rank tracking, schema generators, checklists |
The dirty secret: which deliverables actually work
When we tested the standard deliverables against 1,000 real businesses, the results split cleanly:
Worth paying for (measurable correlation with AI visibility):
- A readable website with pages titled the way customers ask — the single biggest factor
- Review-platform breadth (set up and active on 3–4 platforms, not just Google)
- Bing Places + accurate business data in Bing's index (ChatGPT's search pipeline)
- Location/service content for the suburbs you serve
- Measurement: knowing whether you actually appear, query by query, month by month
Mostly theater (sold constantly, near-zero measured effect):
- Schema markup packages (under 5% correlation)
- robots.txt / "AI crawler access" fixes
- llms.txt files
- Monthly blog posts for "AI freshness" (negative correlation in our data)
- "Citation monitoring" retainers for work that's done once
The uncomfortable arithmetic: the theater items are the easiest to invoice monthly, which is exactly why retainers are stuffed with them. The #1 complaint about this industry in consumer forums is some version of "I paid for an audit and nothing got done."
What the real work should cost
Price the actual deliverables and the numbers get small. The platform registrations are free (Bing Places, Yelp, review sites). Citation building wholesales at $2–4 per listing. AI rank tracking wholesales from ~$20/month. The labor is a few days of competent, unglamorous work: rewriting titles, building location pages, completing profiles.
That's why our own pricing looks broken next to the table above: the free audit does what the $300–$2,500 audits do; the done-for-you fix-pack is $199 one-time; a full AI-ready website is $499 instead of $4,500; monthly monitoring is $49. Same deliverables, automated diagnosis, none of the theater. (Launch pricing while we collect before/after case studies — the data is worth more to us than the margin.)
How to not get burned (whoever you hire)
- Demand a before/after measurement. Baseline queries, documented, re-run at 60–90 days. Anyone unwilling to measure doesn't believe their own service.
- Refuse ranking guarantees. Nobody controls AI results. A guarantee is a tell, not a promise.
- Ask what they WON'T do. If schema markup and content calendars are the headline deliverables, you've found the theater.
- No long contracts. The legitimate one-time work takes days. Monitoring is honestly recurring; everything else should be a project, not a subscription. Complaints about this market cluster around 6–12 month lock-ins.
- Expect 30–90 days, not 30–90 hours. AI results move on index-refresh timescales. "Results in a week" is either a lie or a town with no competition.
Start where every honest engagement should: find out what's actually broken. The free audit shows you — and if nothing needs fixing, it'll tell you that too.
